How MPs use their expenses
The largest proportion of spending for all Members of Parliament is their staffing budget.
This budget is used to employ a very small team of staff, split between their constituency and Parliament, to support local residents with issues and to support the MP in their work.
The Office Costs budget allows MPs to have an office in their constituency from which they can work and support local residents.
The majority of this budget is taken up by rental costs for a premises, alongside the cost of running an office, such as paying for the electricity, furniture, phone system and WiFi.
Within this, the Stationary budget covers the costs of letters, stamps, envelopes, ink and other costs required to communicate with constituents. As most MPs send hundreds of letters every week, in response to constituents, this is often a considerable cost.
When Parliament is sitting, MPs are required to be in London to be able to vote on behalf of their constituency. This means that, on most occasions, they need to stay in London from Monday to Thursday.
The accommodation budget covers the costs of the accommodation for staying in London to ensure that all MPs can represent their area in Parliament, not just those who are already in London.
