🌊 Labour is Delivering Cleaner Seas for Redcar & Cleveland! 🌊

As someone with the pleasure of living by our beautiful coastline here in Redcar and Cleveland, swimming in the sea has been one of life’s simplest yet greatest pleasures for me — and I know it is for many of our residents. But I also know how many of you are fed up with the disgraceful state of our waterways. As promised, we are now delivering real action.

That’s why I’m proud to announce that this Labour government has already introduced landmark legislation to tackle this pollution crisis caused by water companies, ensuring cleaner seas and rivers for all of us to enjoy.

The new Water (Special Measures) Bill, which was introduced to Parliament and is now nearing completion, delivers on Labour’s promise to clean up the water sector and hold polluters accountable.

Here’s how:

1. Tougher penalties for water company executives, including prison sentences for failing to cooperate with investigations.

2. No more bonuses for bosses who fail to protect our environment or customers.

3. Automatic fines for water companies that pollute, with quicker action from regulators.

4. Real-time sewage spill data to be made public within an hour of any overflow.

For too long, the people of Redcar and Cleveland have seen raw sewage pumped into our treasured coastline, turning places like Saltburn into dumping grounds for toxic waste. It’s unacceptable, and under this new government, it will stop.

This legislation gives regulators the tools to take swift and decisive action against companies like Northumbria Water. If these bosses refuse to change their ways, they could end up in court – and worse, even behind bars.

As I said during my election campaign, cleaning up our waterways is personal to me. I want everyone in Redcar, Marske and Saltburn to be able to enjoy a dip in the sea without worrying about their health or, the environment.

Our Labour Government is leading the way in fixing a broken system that has been neglected for 14 years under Tory leadership. These new measures are just the beginning. We are committed to transforming how the water industry operates and speeding up upgrades to sewage infrastructure.

This is your government in action—delivering real change for Redcar and Cleveland.
