Today, the Labour government is announcing an unprecedented £22 billion investment into carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects over the next 25 years, delivering on its promise to make Britain a clean energy superpower, create jobs, and secure the future of British industry. This stands in stark contrast to the years of broken promises, dithering, and delay by the Conservative Party, which repeatedly failed to back this vital technology, jeopardising vital investment and local jobs here on Teesside.
For 14 long years, the Conservatives have peddled empty promises while the UK fell further behind in the race to lead on clean energy. In 2015, they scrapped a £1 billion CCS fund, sending industries into disarray and costing thousands of potential jobs - especially here on Teesside. Despite repeated talk of green investment, with Jeremy Hunt promising £20billion of CCS investment in 2023, it was nothing more than another lie to the British people - zero funds released, zero progress made.
In sharp contrast, the Labour government is delivering real change within 100 days of office, securing concrete commitments. Under Labour, Teesside is finally getting the investment it deserves. For years, Conservative incompetence left industries in limbo, forcing local people to pay the price for a government too focused on internal squabbles and ideological drift. No more.
This £22 billion package means our region, once the steel heart of Britain, is now being rebuilt through green, high-tech industries. Carbon capture will decarbonise critical industries like steel and cement, enabling Teesside to lead the green industrial revolution and ensuring that our young people have the opportunities their parents and grandparents were denied under Tory rule.
CCS projects, like those spearheaded by BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, will help create a cleaner, greener economy, putting the UK on track to meet its net-zero targets by 2050, whilst providing jobs here on Teesside, so local people feel the impact of this investment. Teesside is already at the forefront of the clean energy transition, creating jobs and driving innovation that will transform our region into a world leader in this sector.
Labour's vision is clear - young people here on Teesside should have the opportunities that this investment will bring through green technologies and sustainable industries. Teesside was once the furnace that powered the industrial revolution, producing the steel that built the world. Now, as part of a new industrial renaissance on the banks of the river Tees, the region will be central to a clean energy economy, creating skills, jobs, and innovation.
In stark contrast to the dithering and delay under the Conservatives, Labour is ensuring real, tangible progress for communities long abandoned by Conservative mismanagement. The message from Teesside is clear: Labour delivers jobs, investment, and a green future, while the Tories offer only empty promises and wasted time.
