‘Inspiring’ Grangetown Netball Club Celebrated in Parliament by Local MP, Anna Turley

Local MP for Redcar and Cleveland, Anna Turley, has shown her full support for the remarkable achievements of Grangetown Netball Club by tabling a formal motion in Parliament, in recognition of the club’s 40th anniversary.

The motion highlights the outstanding contributions of Grangetown Netball Club to both sport and the community in Redcar and Cleveland. Established in one of the most deprived areas of the region, the club has grown from humble beginnings to reaching and competing at the highest level of national netball competition in the Premier League.

Grangetown Netball Club are an inspiring example of the sporting brilliance here on Teesside, powered by its local volunteers and coaches who have been instrumental in developing talent and supporting players right here on Teesside. The visionary leadership of Gel Williams, the club’s founder and first team coach, who has devoted four decades to promoting sport and community engagement in Grangetown is inspiring.

Head Coach and Founder, Geraldine Williams said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to see Grangetown mentioned in such a high profile manner. I’ve championed, for many years, for key influencers to raise the profile of what we do and what sport brings into people’s lives.

“Not everyone will want to be a netballer, but it’s not just about the game, it’s about a healthier lifestyle in whatever sport you enjoy.

“We have so many success stories on grassroot level, it needs to be celebrated more and work collaboratively with our local schools, other clubs and other organisations.

“Understanding the importance of our everyday provision and how it can help local people and local communities is vital in addressing many of the complex issues we face in society today.

“To say we are situated in one of most challenging areas our alumni of past players from disadvantaged backgrounds is commendable, and if we are really pushing for change then look no further than grassroots and listen to their voice”

Speaking on the significance of the motion, Anna Turley said:

"Grangetown Netball Club is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, community spirit, and hard work. For 40 years, the club has provided a safe and supportive environment for young women and girls in Grangetown, not only excelling in sport but also fostering essential life skills that will benefit them for years to come. I’m incredibly proud to table this motion in Parliament to celebrate the club’s achievements, and to highlight the invaluable contribution they make to Redcar and Cleveland."

She added:

"I would encourage everyone in Redcar and Cleveland to make the short journey to go and watch these girls play—they are absolutely brilliant!"

The motion also highlights the club’s broader impact on the local community in TS6, celebrating its role in promoting community cohesion and its lasting influence on the lives of young people in the area. Many of the club’s players, who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, have gone on to successful careers in medicine, education, and business. By offering opportunities for personal development, Grangetown Netball Club has helped instil confidence, discipline, and teamwork in its members, empowering them for success in all areas of life.

As the club celebrates its 40th year, this motion stands as a testament to the power of grassroots sport in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.
