The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, visited Ormesby today alongside local MP Anna Turley to discuss key health and social care issues impacting the community. The visit included a tour of local health facilities on Daisy Lane and a series of meetings.
During the visit, Anna Turley raised several key concerns brought to her attention by local residents, particularly in relation to NHS dentistry, cancer treatment and social care. These areas remain significant priorities for the local community, and discussions with Wes Streeting underscored the government’s commitment to addressing these challenges at both the local and national levels.
Wes Streeting’s visit was an important opportunity to highlight the government’s ongoing reforms to build an NHS fit for the future and particularly in how care is delivered. Specifically, the Hospital @ Home initiative which is coordinated by the Single Point of Access team at Daisy Lane, which delivers acute healthcare directly to patients in their homes, reducing the need for hospital admissions. By providing high-quality care in a familiar environment, the programme not only improves patient comfort and outcomes but also helps to alleviate pressure on hospital resources. This is part of a broader effort to ensure that the NHS can continue to meet the growing demand, provide services in the community, invest in prevention and bring down NHS waiting lists.
In a statement following the visit, Local MP Anna Turley said:
"It’s fantastic to welcome the Secretary of State to Redcar and Cleveland today. The government’s national conversation is an important opportunity for residents to have their voices heard on the future of the NHS. We need to build an NHS fit for the future and the sticking plaster politics of the last 14 years have broken our NHS. That is why I am delighted the government is preparing a significant 10-year plan for the NHS with the input of local people here on Teesside.
“I raised with Wes a number of concerns about NHS that residents have raised with me locally including dentistry, cancer services, and the vital role of palliative and social care in our community. To really have your input into how our NHS is ran over the next decade I encourage all residents to have their voices are heard by filling out the consultation below and contribute to our 10 Year Health Plan."
The government is also preparing a significant 10-year plan for the NHS, which will play a central role in addressing many of the concerns raised during the visit. As part of this reform, the government last month launched a major “national conversation” on the future of the NHS, inviting public feedback through an online consultation at change.NHS.uk, also available via the NHS app. The consultation will remain open until the end of the year, with the final version of the 10-year plan expected to be published in spring 2025.

The plan is focused on reducing waiting times, expanding access to care, improving patient outcomes, and addressing the pressures facing the NHS. The national consultation is a vital opportunity for communities to have their say on the future of healthcare services and how the NHS can continue to meet the needs of the population.
