Today marks a landmark moment for Teesside, as the Labour government delivers on its promise to invest £4 billion in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, securing over 4,000 local jobs in the green industries we need. Cementing the region’s role at the heart of the UK’s green industrial revolution.
Following the commitment made at the start of October, the deal has now been officially signed, ensuring that Teesside will play a central role in the country’s transition to net zero.
Labour’s focus on delivering real change is clear: while years of Conservative dithering and broken promises left Teesside’s future hanging in the balance, this new Labour government has acted swiftly to make this vision a reality. The agreement, which brings together leading industry players like BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, is set to transform Teesside into a global leader in clean energy technologies.
This historic deal will reshape the economic landscape of the region, creating a new wave of green jobs that will help decarbonise vital sectors and provide local young people with the opportunities they deserve. Once the heart of Britain’s industrial power, Teesside is now poised to lead the way in clean energy, setting the stage for a prosperous, sustainable future for generations to come.
For too long, the region was held back by Conservative inaction. Under their watch, vital funding for CCS was scrapped. However, under this new Labour Government we have taken decisive action today to demonstrate a commitment to long-term planning and investment in our local young people our economy. Labour's vision is clear - young people here on Teesside will have the opportunities that this investment will bring through green technologies and sustainable industries.
The agreement is a direct contrast to years of Conservative neglect, demonstrating that under a Labour government, Teesside will no longer be left behind. The Labour vision for Teesside is clear: the region will be a hub for the technologies that will power the green economy of the future, creating opportunities for the next generation while ensuring economic growth for the entire country.
